"You, the public, have had enough." Theresa May's Brexit speech tells MPs to decide

Read the Prime Minister full Brexit speech here:

Nearly three years have passed since the public voted to leave the European Union.

It was the biggest democratic exercise in our country’s history.

I came to office on a promise to deliver on that verdict.

In March 2017, I triggered the Article 50 process for the UK to exit the EU – and Parliament supported it overwhelmingly.

Two years on, MPs have been unable to agree on a way to implement the UK’s withdrawal.

As a result, we will not now leave on time with a deal on 29 March.

This delay is a matter of great personal regret for me.

And of this I am absolutely sure: you the public have had enough.

You are tired of the infighting.

You are tired of the political games and arcane procedural rows.

Tired of MPs talking about nothing else but Brexit when you have real concerns about our children’s schools, our National Health Service, and knife crime.

You want this stage of the Brexit process to be over and done with.

I agree. I am on your side.

It is now time for MPs to decide.

So today I have written to Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, to request a short extension of Article 50 up to 30 June to give MPs the time to make a final choice.

Do they want to leave the EU with a deal which delivers on the result of the referendum – that takes back control of our money, borders and laws while protecting jobs and our national security?

Do they want to leave without a deal?

Or do they not want to leave at all, causing potentially irreparable damage to public trust – not just in this generation of politicians, but to our entire democratic process?

It is high time we made a decision.

So far, Parliament has done everything possible to avoid making a choice.

Motion after motion and amendment after amendment has been tabled without Parliament ever deciding what it wants.

All MPs have been willing to say is what they do not want.

I passionately hope MPs will find a way to back the deal I have negotiated with the EU.

A deal that delivers on the result of the referendum and is the very best deal negotiable.

I will continue to work night and day to secure the support of my colleagues, the DUP and others for this deal.

But I am not prepared to delay Brexit any further than 30 June.

Some argue that I am making the wrong choice, and I should ask for a longer extension to the end of the year or beyond, to give more time for politicians to argue over the way forward.

That would mean asking you to vote in European elections, nearly three years after our country decided to leave.

What kind of message would that send?

And just how bitter and divisive would that election campaign be at a time when the country desperately needs bringing back together?

Some have suggested holding a second referendum.

I do not believe that is what you want – and it is not what I want.

We asked you the question already and you gave us your answer.

Now you want us to get on with it.

And that is what I am determined to do.

  1. You silly cow, the people decided in 2016 and the MP's have shown their decision over and over by rejecting your stupid offer. It is unfortunately YOU needs to decide!! MOVE OUT NOW. No Deal is best

  2. May has no credibility what so ever, no one trusts or believes anything she has to say, not once has she shown a shred of leadership, she's an EU appeaser, a traitor, and a total embarrassment.

  3. No one else wanted the job and no one wants it still. Pitiful political representation across the board. Let's leave and get on with it. That petition thing is an embarassment. The whole thing has been pathetic.
But if we have GE I have no one to vote for. Not the be party supports women and children – or seems to deny what they are! 🙁

  4. May is finished, The EU is finished. You just don't know how to get on with that and it's fogging your judgement. Or your mad. Not sure which it is but it's one of the two.

  5. Why tell people we are bored of Bexit. We love it. Better than talking about the weather. It gives the country something to talk about. How much of a joke this deal is. That you won't hold another referendum. BUT you can vote on the same deal over and over. We, the people need to have a say. And one based on fact not myth. You have already bought the DUP. And now you have to buy them again to try and push this deal through. Surely bribery should be illegal. The original referendum was a farcical joke. Bast on lies and deceit. Surely the politicians that lied should be he'd to account. What we are bored of Theresa, is that it isn't moving forward. That the promises of leave were broken. That the lies told are plain as day now. But we are not allowed to have another referendum. To let the people speak… We never once spoke as a nation. We spoke as a divided nation and on something which has such barring there should have been a requirement for a 60% threshold.

  6. Your deal sucks, leaving without a deal would be disastrous, this speech triggered the uptake of the revoke article 50 petition which is now at 2.9 million signatures while a current active petition for leaving without a deal is only at 400k. Your mandate for leaving is gone, people don't want it anymore because we now know how much we were lied to.

Revoke article 50 now, it's your own option.

Do something for the country for once instead of for your own job and your own party.

  7. Well, she is not too wrong. England voters had a fair choice. So I do not understand why a lot of angry comments are directed against May. And by the way: We in Germany have Merkel, who ist probably the worst politician since second world war: For Europe and for Germany! Just read a good comment: "EU has to die to Europe to live."

  8. The nerve of the old cow!

Has the nerve to say we worry about our kid’s schools, and our NHS, when it is this old cow’s Government who are damaging them irreparably, then has the gall to say she is on our side!!!!

The woman is clearly unhinged, what does she think, does she think she is the nation’s sweetheart or something!

What an utter disgrace she is!!!

  9. Voted to leave… Not for a deal… The mobs must now form and do something historic. We must take over the house of commons and punish the traitors who live in our house. This is war now. The discussing elits must be held accountable and destroyed.

  10. You say that we gave you the answer via the referendum, but then you won't take Parliament's answer and want to bring the SAME deal for a third "meaningful vote".
No, put the deal to a public vote, let the people decide, with an option to remain.

  11. The fault is with the self serving MP's who have forgotten why they are paid to represent the people of the UK. Some choose to ignore the result of a democratic vote. Some would never sign any deal. For some strange reason they prefer to be ruled by the EU bureaucrats.
