May to put Brexit deal to MPs tomorrow for third time

The ever-evolving chaos over Brexit has taken yet another twist tonight.

Prevented by the Speaker from putting Mrs May’s EU deal to the Commons a third time, the Government has split the measure in two…detaching the Withdrawal Agreement from the Political Declaration about the future after Brexit, hoping thereby to attract enough votes at least to agree to leave the EU. The DUP are still saying they will vote No and so are others. The prospect of the Government winning is still very much in the balance.

Fears of no Brexit drive hardliners to May's side

They’ve said no – emphatically and twice – to Theresa May’s Brexit deal, but tomorrow afternoon MPs will have the chance to say what sort of Brexit deal they do want.

A group of backbench MPs has taken control of Parliament’s agenda and will make the Commons vote on a series of indicative votes. They could include cancelling Brexit altogether or a much softer Brexit. There are signs tonight that faced with that prospect some Tory Brexiteers have decided to back Theresa May’s deal after all. They might yet get a third vote on it this week.

May dashes to salvage Brexit deal in Brussels

The scene is set for a crisis: MPs indicating they still won’t back the PM’s deal, Theresa May insisting she won’t ask for a long extension, and the EU currently saying nothing except that they might convene an emergency summit next week. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

In Britain, over a million people have signed a petition in the last 24 hours calling for Article 50 to be revoked – a possibility that Jeremy Corbyn refused to rule out earlier.

EU ultimatum to May: you can only delay Brexit if deal is passed

Theresa May has ruled out a long extension to Brexit while she is Prime Minister. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

In angry exchanges at Prime Minister’s Questions, she told MPs that they had indulged themselves on Brexit for too long and that she would never agree to a delay that meant holding European Parliamentary elections.

Instead she has asked the European Council for a delay until the end of June. The European Council President Donald Tusk responded by saying he thought a short extension was possible, but only if MPs vote for the deal next week. With those two ultimatums on the table, MPs’ choices in next week’s vote appear to be narrowing rapidly.
