PM Theresa May says the 'biggest threat' is the Labour Party

The Prime Minister has been told to her face that for Brexiteers including Boris Johnson to support her deal she will need to promise Tory MPs she will quit before the second stage of EU talks begin later this year. Mrs May will address Tories at a meeting of the backbench 1922 Committee tonight and is expected to be asked to announce her departure date by disgruntled MPs. Today senior Brexiteer Andrea Leadsom did little to quell the rumours of Mrs May’s demise and said: I am fully supporting the Prime Minister to get us out of the EU. What happens after that is a matter for the prime minister’. Jacob Rees-Mogg today urged other hardline Eurosceptics to back Mrs May or face losing Brexit with 20 or more hardcore Brexiteers including Boris Johnson ready to swing behind her if she agrees to quit tonight. Mr Rees-Mogg admits that his change of heart will prompt accusations of treachery from some of his followers but told them: ‘Half a loaf is better than no bread’. Tonight MPs will try to grab the levers of power and push Britain towards a softer Brexit by voting on alternatives to Theresa May’s deal and today the rebellion’s architect Sir Oliver Letwin said the Commons will change the law to force the PM to implement their views. Former Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell said today: ‘Oliver Letwin has played a blinder. My friends and colleagues in the ERG can see the instruments of torture laid out in front of them. Oliver has shown them what will happen if they don’t come on side. Finally Mrs May has most of us on side on her deal, and with a following wind she will get her deal this week or early next week’.

Theresa May says it is a 'moment of decision' as Brexit is delayed

Theresa May insisted tonight it was the ‘moment of decision’ for MPs as she accepted EU terms for delaying Brexit by at least two weeks. EU Council President Donald Tusk confirmed plans for a two-stage delay plan. If Mrs May passes her deal at a third attempt next week, Britain will be allowed to stay in the EU until May 22. If she fails, Britain must say whether it will take part in the EU elections by April 12. If elections take place, a longer delay could be agreed – but if the polls are not held then No Deal looms because Britain staying in becomes impossible. The agreement avoids the need for an emergency EU summit as soon as next week. EU sources told Sky News the plan ‘reduces the likelihood of a chaotic crash out in the next 7 days, or a 24 hour scramble to find an alternative.’ In a press conference held after midnight in Brussels, Mrs May said she would return to Britain in the morning to resume work on building support for the deal. Most in Westminster believe she is doomed to fail a third time. She insisted Britain should still leave in an ‘orderly fashion’ with a deal despite MPs rejecting it twice by a landslide. Amid fury at her tirade against MPs last night, Mrs May admitted to expressing her ‘frustration’ at the situation – insisting politicians on all sides had ‘passionately held views’ – but stopped short of apologising.

May struggles with voice as she stresses 'Brexit may be lost'

The Prime Minister was supported in the Commons by her husband Philip, who was watching his wife from the public gallery, as her deal appeared on the verge of a fatal collapse despite her warning rebels that Britain may never leave the EU. Mrs May, who is losing her voice after her late night rescue mission to Strasbourg last night, said: ‘A lot of focus has been on the legal changes – but if this vote does not pass Brexit could be lost’.

Bercow blasts ‘deeply discourteous’ May for delaying Brexit vote

In an extraordinary ticking off, John Bercow warned the PM that MPs across the political divide are furious at the decision, which comes after ministers spent days insisting the vote was on. In a stern rebuke delivered in the packed Commons chamber, he urged ministers to put the decision to delay it to a vote of MPs tonight. If Mrs May follows his advice, then she faces the prospect of being defeated by MPs on a vote to delay another vote she admits she would have been defeated on. The dressing down is a fresh blow for the PM whose authority has been left in tatters after she announced the humiliating U-turn to the Commons today. Mrs May said she had decided to pull the vote because she would have lost if it had gone ahead tomorrow night.

May’s Brexit deal will ‘make Britain worse off’: Corbyn

QUENTIN LETTS: Of all the wearisomely wordy days I have known in the Commons, yesterday’s privilege debate in London about the Government being ‘in contempt’ of Parliament was possibly the worst for self-absorption and historical, lawyerly twirlytude. So many little pinkies were extended at so many angles, largely for party advantage. The privilege debate began at about 12.45pm with a speech of peachy pomposity from Labour’s ‘don’t call me Sir’ Keir Starmer. ‘This motion is extremely important,’ mewed Sir Keir, igniting snorts from MPs who suspected that he really meant ‘I am extremely important’.
