Theresa May says it is a 'moment of decision' as Brexit is delayed

Theresa May insisted tonight it was the ‘moment of decision’ for MPs as she accepted EU terms for delaying Brexit by at least two weeks. EU Council President Donald Tusk confirmed plans for a two-stage delay plan. If Mrs May passes her deal at a third attempt next week, Britain will be allowed to stay in the EU until May 22. If she fails, Britain must say whether it will take part in the EU elections by April 12. If elections take place, a longer delay could be agreed – but if the polls are not held then No Deal looms because Britain staying in becomes impossible. The agreement avoids the need for an emergency EU summit as soon as next week. EU sources told Sky News the plan ‘reduces the likelihood of a chaotic crash out in the next 7 days, or a 24 hour scramble to find an alternative.’ In a press conference held after midnight in Brussels, Mrs May said she would return to Britain in the morning to resume work on building support for the deal. Most in Westminster believe she is doomed to fail a third time. She insisted Britain should still leave in an ‘orderly fashion’ with a deal despite MPs rejecting it twice by a landslide. Amid fury at her tirade against MPs last night, Mrs May admitted to expressing her ‘frustration’ at the situation – insisting politicians on all sides had ‘passionately held views’ – but stopped short of apologising.

May struggles with voice as she stresses 'Brexit may be lost'

The Prime Minister was supported in the Commons by her husband Philip, who was watching his wife from the public gallery, as her deal appeared on the verge of a fatal collapse despite her warning rebels that Britain may never leave the EU. Mrs May, who is losing her voice after her late night rescue mission to Strasbourg last night, said: ‘A lot of focus has been on the legal changes – but if this vote does not pass Brexit could be lost’.

May responds after Brexit vote defeat – BBC News

Theresa May says it is clear MPs do not support the deal.

However, she says that “tonight’s vote tells us nothing about what it does support, nothing about how or even if it intends to honour the decision that people took in a referendum”.

“EU citizens here and UK citizens in the EU deserve clarity as soon as possible,” she says, as do businesses and ordinary people.

The focus now is confirming whether the government still has Parliament’s confidence, she says, and the government will make time tomorrow to debate a no confidence motion if one is tabled by the Labour party.

Theresa May WALKS OUT as Corbyn calls no confidence vote

Theresa May walked out of the Commons tonight as Jeremy Corbyn waited until the last minute to revive his stunt vote of no confidence in her. Mr Corbyn pulled a screeching U-turn to move his motion two hours after appearing to abandon it while claiming the threat alone had been enough to make the PM name a new date for the ‘meaningful vote’ on her Brexit deal. The bizarre sequence of events began at around 3pm when Mr Corbyn’s said he would call for a vote if Mrs May did not reschedule the Brexit showdown she postponed last week. Mr Corbyn did not issue his motion when he spoke at 3.45pm – and Labour launched a social media blitz claiming the threat alone had been enough to get a date. Downing Street said it had made no difference and pointed out Mrs May said last week the vote would be held in the New Year and before January 21. Despite claiming victory, Mr Corbyn returned to the Commons at 5.50pm to table his motion anyway.
