Theresa May says Brexit delay is a ‘matter of great personal regret’ as she blames MPs

The PM called on politicians to get behind her deal as the EU warned Britain will crash out with No Deal within days if they don’t.

It comes as the PM hinted she will quit if her deal doesn’t go through, rather than risk prolonging Brexit beyond June.

Speaking from 10 Downing Street tonight, Mrs May pinned the blame for Brexit chaos on squabbling MPs who can’t decide what they want.

She blasted: “MPs have been unable to agree on a way to implement the UK’s withdrawal. As a result, we will not now leave on time with a deal on March 29.

“This delay is a matter of great personal regret for me. And of this I am absolutely sure – you the public have had enough.

“You are tired of the infighting. You are tired of the political games and arcane procedural rows. Tired of MPs talking about nothing else but Brexit when you have real concerns about our children’s schools, our National Health Service, and knife crime.

“You want this stage of the Brexit process to be over and done with. I agree. I am on your side. It is now time for MPs to decide.”

“I came to office on a promise to deliver the result of the referendum,” she says.

Two years on, MPs have been unable to implement this result, she says, and “as a result we will not be able to leave on time”.

“This is a great personal regret for me.”

Leaders arrive for crunch EU Council talks with Theresa May | Brexit LIVE

THERESA May is set to ask the EU for a short Brexit delay today as Brits are “fed up” with politicians’ dithering more than 1,000 days after they voted OUT.

In a sign that the PM is confident she can get her deal pushed through on the third time, officials said today she won’t be asking for a long delay to add more wasted time to the process.

A No10 official said: “PM won’t be asking for a long extension.

“There is a case for giving Parliament a bit more time to agree a way forward, but the people of this country have been waiting nearly three years now.

“They are fed up with Parliament’s failure to take a decision and the PM shares their frustration.”

A long extension could have been up to three YEARS – with a break clause if a deal is finally done…
