Bercow's NEW Brexit BOMBSHELL: Speaker throws May's deal into new chaos, It MUST change for new vote

House of Commons speaker John Bercow this afternoon threatened new Brexit chaos by throwing doubts over Theresa May’s efforts to get her deal through the Commons by Friday.

The Prime Minister has been considering announcing her resignation date this afternoon to win the support of Brexiteer rebel MPs in return for getting her EU divorce across the line at the third attempt.

But the Speaker warned the government today that her deal must have changed from the last time she brought it forward for a vote – and she cannot use a procedural device known as a ‘paving motion’ to get around him.

Bercow has already been accused of having Remainer sympathies and trying to thwart Britain leaving the EU.

May’s government insists that a new Brexit date agreed with the EU and clarifications to the backstop announced at a summit in Brussels amount to a ‘significant change’.

The Speaker alone will decide if the change is sufficient and is expected to announce the night before if he will block a third vote.

BERCOW'S BREXIT BOMBSHELL: Mister Speaker BLOCKS Theresa May's third vote (full statement)

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow was today accused of sabotaging Theresa May’s Brexit deal after telling MPs she cannot force them to vote on it again without changing it ‘substantially’.

The Commons Speaker cited a 400-year-old Commons precedent to inflict an extraordinary blow to Mrs May’s hopes of getting her EU divorce through Parliament.

Mrs May had planned to go to Brussels on Thursday and apply for a ‘long’ Brexit delay unless MPs show they are ready to back her deal by Tuesday night.

Now Mr Bercow used a precedent from April 1604 – used 12 times in the Commons since then – to warn the PM that she must significantly change her deal if she wants to force another vote on it before March 29.

It means that if Mrs May wants to force MPs into another vote after the EU Brussels summit she will have to ask Mr Bercow who would have the final say on if it goes ahead.

Unless Mrs May can make an acceptable change, the Speaker’s intervention means the PM’s deal will be killed off with No Deal or a long-term delay to Brexit the most likely options.

BREXIT – Theresa May suffers another Commons defeat, this time over Brexit plan B

Theresa May will be obliged to present MPs with a new Brexit plan within three days if her current proposal is voted down next week, after a procedural amendment to the plan’s progress through the Commons was passed amid chaotic scenes.

The amendment to the business motion for the plan, drawn up by the Conservative former attorney general Dominic Grieve, gives May the deadline to put forward new plans if she loses the vote, as many expect, next Tuesday.

The amendment was passed by 308 votes to 297 following stormy scenes in which a series of Conservative MPs castigated the Speaker, John Bercow, for allowing the amendment.

Andrea Leadsom, the leader of the House of Commons, said Bercow should publish the advice he received from the Commons clerks. A No 10 spokesman insisted the government had received clear advice that suggested the motion was not amendable.

Andrea Leadsom, the leader of the Commons, asked Bercow whether the clerk of the Commons supported his decision. Will he publish the advice he received from the clerk?

There is loud cheering from Tory MPs for this.

Bercow says the advice he gets from the clerks is given to him in private.

But he says he also had a written note from the clerk, which he quoted from in his response to the first point of order.
